1: It fell on a day on a bonnie simmer's day,
Ma father's key aged aa astray;
I looked for them among the fields sae gay,
An a wee burr stuck tae ma apron.

Chorus:
Wi a rye doo a dum, wi a rye doo a day,
Rye doo a dum, wi a rye doo day;
A rye doo a dum, wi a rye doo a day,
An a wee burr stuck tae ma apron.

2: As I gaed walkin up the stair,
Combin doun ma yeller hair;
Ma mither's asked me, "Fit's that doun there,
That's sae weel rowed under ma apron?"

3: As I gaed walkin up the stair,
Combin doun ma yeller hair;
Ma faither's asked me, "Fit's that doun there?"
That's sae weel rowed under ma apron?

4: "It's nae tae a knight, nor an earl nor a loon,
He's the best hay makker in aa the toon;
He gave me a stomacher tae tie aroon ma goun,
An I rowed it under my apron."

5: As I aged walking doun the street,
Silver buckles on my feet;
But fa dae ye think but I chanced tae meet,
But the wee burr that stuck tae ma apron.

Chorus:
Wi a rye doo a dum, wi a rye doo a day,
Rye doo a dum, wi a rye doo day;
A rye doo a dum, wi a rye doo a day,
An a wee burr stuck tae ma apron.
