A gem of a song composed by Mary Brooksbank, author of Dundee's famous Jute Mill Song and first published in her book Sidlaw Breezes. Mary often told how she was inspired to write this song after hearing a young tinker boy playing the pipes at her door.

1: As I cam o’er Strathmartine Braes,
Wha dae ye think I seen,
But a brisk young piper laddie,
Cam a-linkin ower the green.

Chorus:
Singin, Hey Donal, Ho Donal,
Dirrum a doo the day;
Hey Donal, Ho Donal,
Dirrum a doo the day.

2: He played a jig an he played a reel,
An he played a sweet strathspey;
And he roosed ma hert as the beat kept time,
Tae the tappin o ma tae.

3: “Noo I’ve nae gowd tae offer you,
For I’ve gaithered little gear;
But you’ll hae love an freedom,
If you come wi me ma dear.”

4: “There’s gowd in the broom o the Sidlaw Hills,
Honey in the heather sweet;
There’s a speckled troot in a hidlin tarn
Green carpet at oor feet.”

5: Now he’s taen up his chanter,
An sic a spring he plays;
Noo I’ve chosen love an freedom,
And I’ll wander aa ma days.

Chorus:
Singin, Hey Donal, Ho Donal,
Dirrum a doo the day;
Hey Donal, Ho Donal,
Dirrum a doo the day.
